Ace has been used as a boy's name in the USA since at least 1881. It was quietly used throughout the 20th century, and had a spike in popularity in 2006. The word "Ace" comes from the French as, which comes from the name of a small Roman coin. In Latin, it means "a unit." In English, "ace" has come to mean something good or high ranking, as in "to ace a test."
