There are several nickname possibilities, such as: Lex, Alex, Al, Andy, and Xander. It's a strong, powerful name. I'm reminded of Alexander the Great, for instance.
because it is a family name, and because it sounds strong to me. Also, Alex is a nice modern sounding derivative and should be easy for people to spell
