I heard it in a movie once where the mother wanted her daughter to be strong and self - confident. Americus just makes a statement!
In the 2000 film "Where the Heart is," starring Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd, the main character (interestingly named Novalee Nation) gives birth to a little girl in Wal-Mart. She decides to name her "Americus," rather than "Wendi with an i" as she was planning, because it was a strong name. This movie was a fertile ground for interesting character names. One character says of her children, "I named all my kids after my favorite snack foods, Brownie, Praline, Cherry and Twinkie."
