Anice

Scottish version of Ann......meaning grace. I am considering naming my daugther Anice partly because my ancestry is Scottish and English.....and mostly because she is a prayer answered. This name expresses very well my feeling of the gift of her life.

Anice is probably a form of Agnes, one that is found in Scotland. Although Agnes comes from a Greek name meaning "pure, chaste," because of St. Agnes, it has come to be associated with the Latin word agnus, meaning "lamb." This is pronounced OHN-yoos, and Agnes was probably pronounced /ANN yis/ or something similar (the 'g' not being hard). It has also been found Annis, Annise, etc. The name Nancy may have begun as a nickname for Agnes.
