Bane

(bayn) this is really traditionally pronounced differently than i would pronounce it (should be bah-ne, i prefer bayn). it's a very simple name and might seem an odd choice (especially the way i would pronounce it, due to the meaning of the word), but there's a simply-stated, no-frills maleness about it that appeals to me.

In modern English, bane means "the source of harm or ruin." As a name, Bane has a few different sources: from the Irish/Scottish word ban meaning "white; fair-haired." from Old English ban meaning "bone"-- possibly a nickname for a skinny person, or from the French bain meaning "bath"-- a name denoting someone who lived near baths, or was a worker or official at a public bath. In recent years it's gotten attention as the name of Batman's nemesis who appeared in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.
