Beatrice
- it has a great melody to it, and I like old fashioned names, and that the nickname Bea also sounds old fashioned.
- A strong and unusual name for the 21st century with a rich literary history.
- It is going to be one of my daughters' name. It came out of Shakespeare's Much Ado about Nothing and also is the name of the beloved of Dante's Hell. It seems to be a soft girl name and I hope my future Beatrice corresponds to this.
- There is something very elegant and charming about Beatrice. It holds a genteel nature to it, and seems very amicable, yet still fiery and full of energy, quite like my own Bea, who is seven. We felt that her name, Beatrice Gibson Mercer, flowed well. We chose it for its many creative forbears and for Shakespeare's Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, as well as to honour an aunt that my husband was especially close to.
Beatrice started out as an Italian and French form of the Latin name Viatrix, meaning "voyager." The English form in medieval times was Beatrix (see also). All these forms are influenced by the Latin beatus meaning "blessed," thus many baby name books list that as a meaning.
