Bowdie is a form of Bodhi, a Sanskrit word meaning "awakening" and is a tenet of Buddhism. It gets its surfer connection from the 1991 film Point Break, where one of the main characters is Bodhi, the leader of a surfer gang, played by Patrick Swayze.
