The musician David Bowie's name at birth was David Jones. In his youth, he went by Davie Jones, but changed his name so as not to be confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees. Thus, he named himself after Jim Bowie, the American frontiersman who popularized the Bowie knife. Bowie can come from either the Old English word byge, meaning 'bend in a river,' or from the Scottish buidhe meaning "yellow," a nickname for someone with blond hair.
