Brunhilde

This lovely name was destroyed by the comic strip Broom Hilda, and by Wagner's operas. But in the original German saga, Brunhilde was an extremely beautiful, extremely strong woman whose only downfall was being tricked by Siegfried while he wore an invisible cloak. The operas would have you believe she was evil -- but Wagner wrote those operas when the idea of a strong woman was considered evil.

Brunhilde comes from the germanic elements brun "armor; protection" and hild "battle."
