Chase

Chase was originally a surname derived from Middle English chase meaning "hunt." As such it was either an occupational name for a hunter or a nickname for someone who was an exceptionally good hunter. Though it's been used since the 19th century, it didn't become popular until the 1980s. Its association with the Chase-Manhattan bank may have bolstered its popularity, as it rose to popularity along with other "yuppie" status-type surname names like Tiffany and Ashley. It is occasionally found for girls, often spelled Chaise, which, pronounced /SHEZ/ is the French word for "chair."
