Cheri

Cheri Anne: my best friends name; it means 'dear, favored grace'

Cheri is a 20th century name, based on the French word chéri, meaning "dear one." It started being used as a name in the 1920s following the publication of the novel Chéri by French novelist Colette. In this book (and its 1926 sequel), Chéri is the nickname of a nam named Fred Peloux, who is in love with an older woman. Cheri's rise to popularity in the USA follows that of Sherry/Shari, which it is often pronounced identically to. Sometimes you find it as Cherie or Sheree and pronounced on the second syllable.
