In Greek mythology, Damon and Pythias were best friends who were so inseparable, that when one was sentenced to die, the other offered to die in his place. The king who had condemned him to death was so impressed, he let them both go free, and asked to be one of their friends as well. It is derived from the Greek word meaning "to tame."
