Ellery is an English surname derived from the personal name Hilary. Hilary in turn is a medieval form of the Latin name Hilarius meaning "cheerful." The most famous Ellery is probably Ellery Queen, a fictional detective in the 1930s and 1940s who was also the pen name of the authors of the books about him.
