Frances
- Feminine, without being overly frilly, and also lends itself to the adorable pet name Frankie. Also, I believe that its meaning is "Frenchwoman," and I love France and French things to no end. If I had a daughter named this, her full name would be either Frances Rebecca or Frances Elaine.
- I like mostly older names. To me it seems like a beautiful woman from the 1920s.
- Classic, strong, and cute...it's a wonderful old name for a fiery little girl. I could picture her with tight curls or fire red hair and of course a bright stain on her dress from lunch...awww how cute eh?
- My eldest daughter’s full name is Mary Frances Mercer, honouring my late mother, but she has since birth been called Frances. A refined and quiet child, Frances has fully lived up to her name, which I have loved since childhood.
- because it's the name of my favorite book character, from Franny and Zooey by JD Salinger.
Francis/Frances is an English form of the Italian Francesco. Originally simply a word meaning "person from France," it was used as a nickname for the 13th century St. Francis of Assisi (originally named Giovanni) because of his father's business connections in France. Later on his followers became known as the Franciscan order of friars, and various forms of Francisco became used as names throughout Europe. In English, Frances is generally the spelling used for girls, while Francis is used for boys.
