Gareth
- a Welsh name - very gentle sounding, nicer than Gary or the overused Garret
- I'll admit that I originally loved this name because it was the name of the boy I had my first crush on. 30 years later, I still love the name--I think of Arthurian legends first (then of course, Gareth who sat next to me in 3rd grade!). It's a nice classic, underused name with a lot of history. I also like the lispy -th at the end.
Gareth, in this form, was first used by Malory in his 15th century collection of King Arthur tales called Le Morte d'Arthur. In it, Gareth is the famed lover of Eluned (see Lynette). As a name, it may be derived from gwaraidd meaning "civilized."
