Geoffrey

Alternate, more unique spelling of Jeffrey. I think it's very dignified, without being too weighty for a little boy. I always think of the Medieval English author Geoffrey Chaucer when I see this name.

Geoffrey is a name introduced to England by the Normans. Its origins are a little obscure. The first element may derive from the Germanic walah "stranger," gisil "hostage; pledge" or gawia "territory." The second part is most likely from frid meaning "peace." Through the ages it was often confused with the name Godfrey. In the USA, the most common spelling is Jeffrey, while Geoffrey remains more popular in England.
