Horatio

I love this name - it has a great sound, and makes me think of someone honest, strong, and good. And of course it comes from the best work of English literature of all time - Shakespeare's Hamlet. I love the character in the play; he is Hamlet's confidant and friend, and he is noted in such great lines as "Alas, poor Yorik. I knew him, Horatio," and "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." And more recently, the lead character of the TV show CSI: Miami is also named Horatio. I think I watch the show just because of the name. The character fits very well into my idea of what a person named Horatio should be like - He's tough and unrelenting on the "bad guys," but has a sensitive side, always showing sympathy for the victim. Horatio is a cool name!

Horatio is a form of Horatius, a Roman name which may stem from the Latin word horus meaning "hour; season." it may also be from an unknown Etruscan word. A number of well-known Horatios are out there, starting with Shakespeare's character in Hamlet who was Hamlet's closest friend. Another is Horatio Hornblower, a character in the novels of C. S. Forester. Horatio Alger (1832-1899) was an American author who pioneered the rags-to-riches story allowing generations of impoverished people to believe they could achieve the American Dream through hard work.
