Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean named Xaymaca by the Arawak Indians. The name may mean "land of wood and water" or "land of springs." As a first name its most famous bearer is probably author Jamaica Kincaid (born Elaine Cynthia Potter Richardson in 1949).
