Jasper

Although "jasper" is a gemstone, it has no connection to the name Jasper. As a name, Jasper has been found as far back as the Middle Ages, where it was assigned to one of the 3 Magi who visited the baby Jesus in the Bible (the names being Caspar (the Dutch form of Jasper), Melchior, and Balthazar). The name most likely comes from a Persian word meaning "treasurer." Its popularity is probably due to the association with the gemstone, which ultimately comes from the same Persian root word, though via different routes. In the 2000s the name got a boost in popularity thanks to a minor vampire character in Stephanie Meyers' Twilight series.
