Keon

(Pronounced KEE-an). This is an old Irish variation of Evan (John). You can find traces of it in the surname McKeown (Son of Keown). It's not unlike Keanu in Hawaiian or Keoni in Finnish. It is NOT, I repeat NOT a "recently created" name and does NOT rhyme with "Leon."

Keon is more common in the USA as rhyming with Leon, a modern coinage based on names like Dion and Leon. The Irish traditional name Cian is sometimes anglicized Kian, and could be anglicized Keon. It is pronounced /KEE un/, and comes from an Old Irish word meaning "enduring; ancient." The surname McKeown is an anglicization of either Mac Eoghan ('son of Eoghan' - Eoghan meaning 'born of the yew') or McEoin ('son of John'). It is generally pronounced /mc K'YOHN/.
