Leighton
Leighton is an English and Scottish surname derived from several place names. The etymologies of all the places contain the element tun meaning "settlement; enclosure." The first element can be derived from either leac meaning "leek" or lad meaning "watercourse." It's never been terribly common as a first name in the USA. it was used sporadically for boys until the late 20th century when it was used occasionally for girls. In the 2000s, it took off as a girls' name probably in part due to the popularity of the American acress Leighton Meester (b. 1984) and the trend of using surnames as first names (i.e., Peyton, Ashton etc.)
