Linda

Linda took the USA by storm in the 1940s eventually replacing Mary as the #1 girls' name. This marked the first time ever that Mary had been dethroned since the Social Security Administration started keeping track of names (1880). Linda was originally a medieval pet form of names containing the Germanic element linde meaning "smooth" (i.e., Ermelinde, Rosalind etc.). However, it was probably more due to that fact that linda means "beautiful" in Spanish that made this name so popular.
