• Marissa is an awesome name. I tell people if I ever have a child, I'll name it Kimberly Marissa, because it means Ruler of the Sea. Also, it gives the child a really cool nickname: Rissa. That's my best friend's first name.
• This names is sooo beautiful and unique and has MANY meanings. Latin: Seafoam Greek: Seastar Hebrew: the Perfect One. Spanish: Sea Angel or Mermaid. Now how can you not LOVE this name?!? It says, "pretty,talented,strong and bold." all at once. I actually hate to put this up here because I want it to stay unique and unused.

In English, Marissa is a modern invention--adding the suffix -issa (as in Clarissa, Melissa) to the name Maria. It may also represent a form of Marisa. Because of its similarity to the Latin word for "sea" (mare) and the Latin phrase Stella Maris "Star of the sea," which is one of the names of the Virgin Mary, it is often recorded in baby name books as having a nautical meaning.
