McKenna is an Irish surname, an anglicization of Mac Cionnaith, which means "son of Cionaodh." The second element of Cionaodh is Aodh, the name of the Celtic sun god. The first element may be cion meaning "love; respect." As a first name, it started being used in the latter half of the 20th century following on the heels of the popularity of Mackenzie.
