Melinda is a modern creation, possibly a form of Mel (from names like Melanie or Melissa or just from the Greek meli meaning "honey") + the suffix -inda or -linda meaning "beautiful" in Spanish. Many names were created along these lines, like Clarinda, Lucinda etc.
