I was once told that this is a Spanish pet name meaning "my daughter", but I prefer a more French-like pronunciation (mee-zha). I don't know if it is an actual "real" name. I thouht of it as an alternate to Meja (a singer who did a duet with Ricky Martin), because that name is pronounced May-uh and sounds like a mispronunciation of Maya.
In Spanish, "Mija" is a contraction of mi hija, meaning "my daughter." It is often used as a term of endearment by parents for their daughters.
