Nicola

I can't believe no-one has posted this already! It's quite ordinary but I know a very special woman called Nicola and therefore it's become a special name to me. It's good 'cos it's ordinary enough that people know how to spell it etc, but it's not used a great deal so you don't have to worry about your kid having the same name as everyone else.

This is a feminine form of Nicholas (see also) that was hugely popular in Britain in the 60s and 70s. The French form, Nicole is much more popular in the USA-- Nicola is virtually unknown there. Nicola is also a man's name in Italian and Croatian (e.g., the inventor Nicola Tesla).
