Located on the eastern bank of the Tigris river, Nineveh was the capital of Assyria in biblical times. The name may derive from Nina, a name of the goddess Ishtar-- early accounts of the city regale it to be a center of worship of Ishtar. Later on the name became associated with the Arabic nuna meaning "fish," and thus was thought to mean "place of fish."See Also: Nina, Ishtar
