Ora is a feminine form of the Hebrew or meaning "light." In English common usage it is probably derived from Latin oro meaning "to pray." In the USA it was first used in the 19th century, and as such may have been coined on the basis of sound, matching other popular names at the time, like Cora, Flora, Dora, Nora etc.
