Oscar

Oscar is an anglicization of the Irish name Osgar, which comes from elements meaning "deer" and "friend", thus its meaning has been said to be "lover" or "friend" of deer.

The name Oscar was used by Scottish author James MacPherson in his 18h century Ossianic poem cycle. Napoleon, who was a fan of MacPherson's works, gave this name to his godson, who later became King Oscar of Sweden. Thus the name was introduced to Sweden, where it was re-spelled Oskar.

Because of the Swedish connection, many thought it was a native Swedish name, derived from germanic roots. Thus many baby name books report Oscar incorrectly as meaning "divine spear," "great warrior," or words to that effect.
