Phineas

(Fin-nee-us) - This name really grew on me....my Great Grandfather bears this name.  I only really saw it as an interesting name though after I read "A Separate Peace".  As traditional a name as it is, it is pretty funky and could carry well in this generation.

In Greek mythology, Phineas was a king of Thrace. His name may derive from the Thracian city Phinea. This form may have inspired the translation of the biblical name Phinehas, which may derive from the Egyptian Panhsj. it has come to be associated with the Hebrew words peh meaning "mouth" and nhsh which can mean "serpent" or "omen." As of 2010, it is becoming somewhat more popular in the USA than before, in part because of the growing popularity of the name Finn. Parents are looking to names like Finnegan and Phineas which will yield the diminutive "Finn" or "Phin."
