Riordan
- (ree-OR-dan) - All right, all right -- I know it's traditionally pronounced "REER-dan." But doesn't it sound great my way? And doesn't it just look like it should be pronounced my way? It means "king's poet" and I've been in love with it ever since I first came across it in a name book.
- Riordan, pronounced "ree-OR-dan," means "king's poet." It would have the nickname Rory, which is adorable. I like it because I have never heard it used, and it has a wonderful sound to it. Gabriel means "man of God," and it sounds great with Riordan. I wouldn't use it as a first name though, because I like it in full, NOT shortened to Gabe.
In Irish, Riordan is pronounced /REE ur dun/ (or like Reardon). It's the modern form of the Irish name Ríoghbhardán, coming from ríogh "king" combined with bard "poet" + the diminutive suffix -án.
