Ripley is an English surname coming from elements meaning "strip" and "clearing; meadow; field." It first was brought to the public's attention as a girls' name in the movie Alien. The protagonist in that film was played by actress Sigourney Weaver and, though her first name was Ellen, was called almost exclusively Ripley (her last name)
