Ruth

The Biblical name Ruth is so ancient, scholars aren't sure of the meaning. It possibly stems from a Hebrew word meaning "companion; friend." Because of the English word "ruth" meaning "compassion; pity" (as in the opposite of "ruthless"), the Puritans used it, using it as another "virtue" type name (i.e., Faith, Hope, Amity etc.)
