Salem is a place name in the Bible, considered to be another name for Jerusalem. It is derived from a Hebrew word meaning "whole; complete," possibly implying "at peace." It is also the name of numerous places around the globe, the ones in North America probably being named for the biblical place. Two famous Salems in the USA are in Massachusetts (famous for its 17th century witch trials) and the capital of the state of Oregon.
