In Greek mythology, Selene (also Seleni, Seleniki) was a moon goddess. She fell in love with a shepard and asked Zeus to grant him eternal life. So, he did, and the shepard got older and older until he eventually shrivelled into a grashopper. The next shepard Selene fell in love with, she asked Zeus to put him to sleep forever. Thus he kept his youth, and Selene was able to bear him a bunch of daughters.
