Sierra

As a name, Sierra comes from numerous place names in North and South America. In Spanish, sierra means "saw," and refers to jagged mountain ranges that look like the teeth on a saw. It is found in names such as Sierra Nevada ("snowy sawtooth-shaped mountains") and Sierra Madre ("mother sawtooth mountain range"). As a girl's name it became popular in the USA in the late 20th century following the rise of other place-type names like Dakota and Savannah.
