Spencer
- Maybe if you live in the American midwest where I'm told every fourth boy is named Spencer, this is one to skip for you. But if you live elsewhere (as I do), this one may be the little gem you're looking for. I've encountered a few people with Spencer as their surname and I've unfortunately met one little girl named Spenncer (boy name, bad spelling and all), but the only male Spencer I've ever met in real life is Spencer Smith, the drummer for Panic! at the Disco (and he's originally from the American midwest)! To me, this name sounds educated without sounding arrogant. It's trendy without being "cutesy". It's even one that transitions quite easily from child to adult. It looks good on a class roster and on a resume. I can see Spencer working as a baseball player, a construction worker, a teacher or the president or anywhere in between. It's just one of those well-rounded names that seems like a solid and promising choice for a child.
- Every Spencer I've ever known has been an attorney! Spencer is just a fantastic, smart name for a boy! It has a nice British feel to it. Not too common, but not too unusual. Perfect!
- kind of old-fashioned but still modern
- Just a good, friendly-sounding, dignified name which I fell in love with when I met the most wonderful little boy named Spencer!!!!
- Even though there is a kid at the day care where I work named Spencer that is rude and quite the brat, I love the name.
- Spencer Reilly (ri-lay): this name is perfect 4 any age and just ages gracefully. it also sounds quite sweet
Spencer was originally an English surname, coming from the Norman French dispencier or "dispenser" (i.e., one who dispenses provisions; a steward.) It has been in use as a first name since the 19th century. It gained in popularity with the rise to fame of American actor Spencer Tracy (1900-1967) (also responsible for the popularity of the name Tracy), but it peaked in popularity in the 1990s. It is also occasionally found on girls.
