Stacy was originally an English surname derived from the personal name Eustace (from Greek meaning "Fruitful"). It was occasionally used as a boys' name until the mid-20th century when it started becoming popular for girls. Stacy's peak popularity was in the early 1970s, following the rise and fall of the name Tracy-- it probably was seen as a newer, fresher form of Tracy, but since has been replaced by newer names like Macy and Casey. Stacy is sometimes used as a pet form of Anastasia.
