Stella
- A classic, romantic name which obviously means Star, and I think it is a pretty name.
- Not yet popular, Stella sounds like Belle and is reminiscent of the stars. I like Stella Maris, "star of the sea," which is a name for the Virgin Mary.
- This name sounds classy, very feminine, and is much too under-used. It's the name of a character in A Streetcar Named Desire. Plus, it means 'star' in Latin. A unique name for a unique individual.
- It's old fashioned, its pretty, its a name that I would have liked to have. It's easy to pronounce and spell. Familiar, but not too common.
- A very elegant, sophisticated, chic sort of name. A favourite of mine since college, Stella has an aristocratic air developed by Sir Philip Sidney in his sonnets and confirmed by the modern-day model Stella Tennant.
- I think it sounds very hip and creative
- Stella Madison: Madison sounds strong but thoughtful, almost diplomatic. Giving it to a girl is a nice twist on the suffix Stella (meaning 'Star') is flamboyant, saucy and strong-willed.
The name Stella was first coined by poet Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) for his sonnet cycle "Astrophel and Stella." It is the Latin word for "star." It never became popular as a first name in the USA until the Victorian era, where it peaked in popularity in 1880s. It's currently coming back into fashion, at #118 of the top 7000 as of 2010.
