Stuart

Stuart is fairly uncommon in the USA for small children, yet it's a regal, soft-sounding name. I like it because it reminds me of Stuart Adamson, one of my rock n' roll heroes (the lead singer of the Scottish band Big Country, who killed himself on my sister's birthday in 2001). It also has literary overtones-- Stuart Little is one of my all-time favorite books.

Stuart is the Norman French form of the English occupational surname Stewart, meaning "a steward." It was brought to England in this form by Mary Stuart, also known as Mary, Queen of Scots in the 16th century. As a first name, it started being used in Scotland probably around the 19th century in honor of this royal house.
