I just want a freaking part-time job!

So I went to the Hollywood Video web site, because they don’t take applications in person anymore. It was like I was applying for US citizenship or something! There’s a background check. There’s an eventual pee-in-a-dixie-cup test. I had to electronically sign about 15 waivers. Plus, there was a 20 page STRONGLY AGREE, AGREE, DISAGREE, STRONGLY DISAGREE section. It was nuts! Here are a few of the questions:
- There’s no use having close friends; they always let you down - what? Is this so they can put you in charge of the goth movie section or something?
- You do not fake being polite - I guess this pertains to customer service, but it’s kind of a dumb way to ask. Besides, who’s not going to lie about it?
- Your friends and family approve of the things you do - what if your friends and family are complete psycho drug addicts who think you should be a crack-ho?
- It is maddening when the court lets guilty criminals go free huh?
- You look back and feel bad about things you’ve done — there were about 3 different questions about this very topic– regretting your past.
- You could describe yourself as ‘tidy’ - again, worded in different ways, there were at least 2 different questions like this.
- It is easy for you to feel what others are feeling - WTF does this even mean? Like if someone comes into the store all pissed off at their dog peeing on the couch, I’d suddenly become furious?
Holy crap. I just want a stupid part-time minimum-wage job for 2 days a week, and maybe some nights. Why the heck do they need to know if anyone in my family has gotten food stamps in the past 6 months? Is that really relevant to knowing when American Pie part 8 is gonna be released on DVD? oy vey.

Update: Matt thinks they’re trying to screen out people who will steal from them. (I think they’re trying to screen out weird antisocial film geeks, personally.)

They’re probably just trying to screen out losers who are only applying to this job because it’s all they’re qualified for. .. oh, wait!
you know, the ones who don’t take retail seriously and habitually show up late. Imagine that!
