cars and trucks and things that go
I overheard the best conversation today in the parking lot as I was going to work. It was between a black guy and a white guy, both in their 40s. The white guy was short and stocky, and had a greyish moustache and messy hair. The black guy looked like he was from East Africa, and was tall and skinny with close-cut hair.
White guy (to black guy): I mean, is it always bling-bling?
–Black guy (looks slightly confused and nods) —
White guy: I mean, do you have to say it twice, or is there ever just bling?
I guess maybe you had to have been there. It was the incredibly clueless way he was saying it that was so funny, and the way that the African guy stood there looking clueless.
I almost bought a car yesterday. It seemed to be a good deal– it was a 1995 Honda Civic lx or ex or whatever letters mean that it has the fancier engine. They explained it to me, but I can never remember letters and numbers. It had 200,000 miles on it, but according to the Kelley Blue Book, it was worth way more than what the dealer guy was asking ($2000). I even put a deposit down… but I realized that I don’t really want to spend that much on a car, even if it’s worth it. Besides, this car had just come in as a trade-in, and the dealer has no idea what had been done to it, or what the track record was. Plus, I just like hatchbacks, and although this car had a big trunk and the seats folded down; it still wasn’t a hatchback. So, I called and got my deposit back.
Supposedly, there’s a secret mythical place near Wistah where all the rednecks go to buy cheap Hondas and Toyotas in ugly discontinued colors for really cheap. Robin and I are going to make a sojourn out there on Saturday to check it out. It’s been hot and sticky out, and I’m too much of a pussy to ride my bike to work if it gets above 85, so a car would be really nice!
What I really want is a backhoe (heh, I said ho). Those things actually go pretty fast. Wouldn’t it be cool to drive around in a backhoe?

Actually, I’d like a 90-ton crane, but that might be hard to parallel park in Allston.

Look at all that cool cantilevered awesomeness!
My dream car is, however, a Messerschmitt. Someday, when I am rich and famous, I will import one of these, and live happily ever after.

And, as long as we’re on the topic of tiny European cars, which I have such a fetish for… we’ll mention that I love Trabis. Any car with a 2-cycle engine is good with me! Check out this one–it’s totally pimped out!
So yeah. I’ve been thinking about cars, which I don’t do very often. I’m kind of excited to have a new car, although I’m not excited to have to have a whole new host of problems to have to fix on a car. There’s this art museum in Lowell that I want to go to, but I’m way too lazy to hop the commuter rail out there. I’d also like to take another trip to the DeCordova museum. I’m all about day trips and road trips. I need something to do with my days off! I’ve been spending them basking in the air conditioning reading or watching movies I’ve mostly already seen–not very productive or mind-expanding there!

I’m pretty sure the Honda Civic has one of the best track records out there for repairs. I don’t think you’re gonna be shelling out for $600 brake jobs 3x/year like you did with that Geo thing.
I totally want a “Ṡkoda Ahoj!” It “radiates a sense for fun and practicality” without “representing frail fashion trends.” Ha!

Awww, that’s pretty cute! Howver, check out the Roomster! That is the Human Transport of the Future! Look at the interior–plenty of room for 15 people, yet just two seats to accommodate the declining Swedish population! And… it looks like something out of Star Trek: The Next Generation!
