I celebrated my geekitude tonight by seeing the Doctor Who episode “The Pirate Planet” on the big screen. Yes, it’s a double dose of nerdiness since Douglas Adams was the one who wrote it. The Brattle Theater had a Doctor Who fest this weekend, showing key episodes Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The Friday and Saturday shows were sold out, so I had to make due with this one, with guys in yellow togas going around moaning “life… force… dying…” and people getting killed with a robotic parrot. At least it gave me the opportunity to show off my sexxxy Dalek t-shirt.

Alas, today was Saki’s last day in this country; I won’t see him again for a while. Last night we celebrated by seeing Pineapple Express, which was pretty funny. There were exactly 3 people in the audience of our generation; you could tell because they all laughed at the 2 semi-obscure Gen-X references: 227 and the Rancor. Kids these days just don’t get subtle humor involving Jackée.

I’m evolving– I’ve been slowly getting rid of all the archaic pieces of technology that I’ve cleaved to for reasons that are 1 part sentimentality and 3 parts cheapness. Saki gave me his surround sound stereo receiver DVD player thingie. Thus I was able to get rid of 2 ancient stereo components (my receiver & CD player) and 2 more (8-track player & dysfunctional turntable) are slated for removal as well. I just relieved my table from about 30 lbs of 20th century equipment! Out with the old! Plus, it comes with 5 tiny little cute speakers & a giant subwoofer so I can jettison my giant faux-woodgrain piece-of-furniture speakers which didn’t work that well anyway. I have a newer pair of nice bookshelf-sized speakers that I bought 6 or 7 years ago– maybe I can get $10 for them on Craig’s List or something. Next on the list of obsolete electronics due to rot in a landfill for eternity: Pad’s former TV that is now 26 years old.
