Auriel

Hebrew for "Light of God"

This is a Roman female slave name, derived from aureus meaning "gold." The meaning "light of god" is misleading-- the writer of that definition is possibly thinking this is derived from the Hebrew words "awr" meaning "light" and "iel," meaning "of God." I haven't run across the names Oriel in my travels, though there are similar Hebrew girls' names derived from the word for "light"- Oralee, Oralit, Ora, Orit, and Orliss. Auriel is a well-documented English form of the Latin name.
