Maya
- I plan to name my daughter (if I have one) Maya Atzlan. I chose Maya because I am deeply interested in Mayan culture and it is not only beautiful but it pays homage to an a personal interest of mine. The middle name, Atzlan (pronounced oughts-lawn), is actually a name that my husband is hell bent on. While we are not sure of the meaning, since we can't find this name anywhere, we do know that it is of Indian (as in Mexican Indian) descent. This is perfect because it flows with Maya well and they compliment each other as well as our last name which is Latin as well!
- prounounced My -a, a nickname that my boyfriend calls me, my name is Mia pronounced MEE -a. Funny if anyone else calls me that I hate it, but from him I think it is nice.
- Maya Isadora - Maya is pretty, lively and modern, without being overused. Isadora sounds bohemian and spunky, but still feminine, to me.
Maya/Maia is one of those names that exists across many cultures. In Greek mythology, Maia was the mother of Hermes, one of the Pleiades. In Roman Mythology, Maia was the goddess of spring (from whom we get the name of the month of May). Maya was also the name of the Buddha's mother, in Buddhist tradition. In Sanskrit, the name means "the illusory power of God," and is one of the great philosophic concepts of Indian Hinduism embodied in female form. The name Maya, since it occurs in so many traditions, may be related to the Indo-European word for "mother." The Mayans were also an indigenous people in Central America.
