Ruth

Hebrew for "beautiful friend."  This name is a nice one syllable alternative to Ann or Lynn.  The Biblical story of Ruth and Naomi is a very touching story of friendship and Ruth is a wonderful role model for little girls.

The Biblical name Ruth is so ancient, scolars aren't sure of the meaning. It possibly stems from a Hebrew word meaning "companion." Because of the English word "ruth" meaning "compassion; pity" (as in "ruthless"), the Puritans used it, using it as another "virtue" type name (i.e., Faith, Hope, Amity etc.)
