in Norse mythology, the Valkyries were warrior maidens who served Odin, the king of the gods. Wearing brilliant armor, the Valkyries got to fly around and conduct battles, pick which warriors would be slain and go to serve Odin in Valhalla (reserved for warriors slain in battle), and then lead them there. They also served mead in Valhalla.
