Colleen

Name Nerds main

FOR REAL: Until the 20th century, Colleen wasn't a name at all, simply the anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic word cailín, which means "girl." In its English spelling, it was often used by English speakers either as an endearing or sentimental term for an Irish girl, or sometimes as a derogatory term as well. As a name, it was first used by the silent film actress Kathleen Morrison (1899-1988), who adopted Colleen Moore as her stage name. Since the early 20th century, Colleen has been a common name in the USA, first among people of Irish descent, but later among the general population. Colleen is not used as a name in Ireland, it is used mainly by the descendants of Irish immigrants in other English-speaking countries.
