Hugh

Name Nerds main

FOR REAL: Hugh was common in Medieval France, and then in England after the Norman Invasion. It was originally a short form of names beginning with the Germanic element hug meaning "spirit; heart; mind," but has been used on its own more frequently as most of the longer names have died out (Hubert seems to be the only one that has survived into modern times).

diminutives: Huey, Hughie
